Last Sunday, 15th September 2019, we had a wonderful sermon that I am still thinking about today and reviewing my life and my choices because of the simplicity and practicality of the message.

The sermon in summary below;

Matthew 5:14-16 New International Version (NIV)

1“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

In the African context, a lamp is likened to a tin lamp. It is a catastrophic set up to place a tin lamp under a bowl. In our context a woven basket. The basket would burn alongside everything beside it. Secondly, what ulterior motive would you have to place a tin lamp under a basket? That is pure backwardness. The purpose of light is to see and to drive out darkness.

However, we, sometimes, disqualify ourselves from being the light of the world because of 3 things; Offence, Disobedience & Unforgiveness. We disqualify ourselves being the channel with which others can experience Christ and for Christ to work in us because of these 3 acts.

The significance of light in the Bible is;

  1. To drive away spiritual darkness. No other way.
  2. It is God’s Word: Psalms 119:130 The unfolding of your word gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
  3. Freedom from oppression. Darkness is very oppressive and is likened to ignorance.
  4. Light is the armor with which to fight darkness

How are we dwelling in darkness?

  • Being silent when you should speak at work, at home, with friends, in the society.
  • Going along with the crowd. Being fearful to stand alone or against popular opinion so long as your need is met.
  • Denying the truth of the Word of God. If the Word of God does not minister to you then it shall most likely not speak to the other person through you.
  • Ignoring the needs of others through offence, disobedience and unforgiveness.

As you consider this, may God help you and I to renew our mindsets to enable us be true witnesses to Matthew 5:14-16.

God bless.
